MONTEREY, VA Houston Turner Smith, 90, of Monterey, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014. He was born January 27, 1924 in Staunton a son of the late Elva M. Smith. Mr. Smith was owner and operator of H.T. Smith & Son Excavating and a farmer. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star while serving in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member and commander of VFW Post 4989. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt in the Laurel Fork area. He is survived by his son, Charles Smith and Sherry Wolfe; grandson, Lyle Smith; partner, Judy Skeen, all of Monterey; step-daughter, Sarah Skeen of Richmond and step-son, Sam Skeen of Staunton. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 in Monterey Cemetery with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. There will be no public viewing or visitation.
