Helen Moats

Helen Audrey Moats, 87, of Monterey, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Bath Community Hospital.  She was born July 23, 1921 in Vanderpool, a daughter of the late Arthur M. and Lydia Ellen (Jones) Simmons.

On February 9, 1946, she married William Virgil “Jake” Moats, who preceded her in death on May 10, 1994.  She was also predeceased by two brothers, James and Melvin Simmons and four sisters, Evelyn Moats, Emma Botkin, Margie Simmons and Margaret Gum.

Mrs. Moats was a homemaker and a familiar face at Jerry’s Electronics.  She loved children and for many years did babysitting in her home and was thrilled to see those children’s babies.  She was a member of the Monterey Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Dale Simmons of Monterey; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Melody Moats of Monterey; a sister-in-law, Crystal Simmons of Bridgewater and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Monterey Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Melissa Harmon, Rev. C. William “Bill” Cox and Rev. Lester LaPrade.  Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.

Active pallbearers will be Billy and Eric McDaniel, Melvin Simmons, Jr., Doug and Todd Moats, Denny Thompson, Charles Simmons and David Vandevander.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
