Harlan Eugene Waybright, age 90, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at his home in Churchville.
Born November 7, 1933 in Cave, WV, he was a son of the late Ray and Nellie Susan (Mullenax) Waybright. On April 1, 1953, he married Mary Bell Wimer, who preceded him in death in 2018 after 65 years of marriage.
A carpenter by trade, Harlan was a self-employed contractor who was known for his problem-solving skills and craftsmanship. He was a member of the Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed deer hunting and wood cutting in the fall, mushroom hunting and digging ramps in the spring, and was an avid fisherman, able to catch fish just about anywhere. He was an amazing gardener, known to raise huge tomatoes, and enjoyed picking berries. He enjoyed time spent watching football games and NASCAR races, and later in life worked countless hours completing puzzles.
Harlan was known for his soft-spoken way and was always kind and gentle. A man of few words, his love for his family was always reflected by his actions. Additionally, he loved his wife, Mary, unconditionally. From the day they married until her passing, he saw to it that her every need was met. Above all, he will be remembered as a steadfast provider to his family, loyal friend, and without question, a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Randolph, Olin, and Ocie Waybright.
Surviving family members include his three daughters, Kathy S. Hart and companion, Gary McClung of Troutville, Dianna C. Gordon and husband, Edward of Swoope, and Lisa A. Taylor and husband, Butch of Grottoes; two sons, H. David Waybright of Staunton and L. Shane Waybright and wife, Sue of Churchville; six grandchildren Ericka Martin of Roanoke, Rodney Elkins of Churchville, Brandy Waybright of Charlottesville, Christopher Waybright of Goshen, Seth Tumer of Craigsville, Madison Simmons of Goodview; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Garland Wimer of Churchville; two sisters-in-law, Dallas and Judy Waybright, both of Monterey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and his wonderful and loving caregiver, Debbie Wade, who is considered family.
