Gracie Fairbanks Simmons, 85, passed away, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at Augusta Health.
She was born Sept. 10, 1925 in Marshall, a daughter of the late Cornelious and Sally Lee Thorpe Simmons.
She had lived in Hot Springs most of her life and recently went to live with her niece, Judy Kincaid and husband, Glenn, at 2820 Old Greenville Road, Staunton.
Miss Simmons was a member of Hot Springs Presbyterian Church, the Morning Presbyterian Circle and had retired from The Homestead resort after 46 years. Miss Simmons will be remembered by friends and family as an individual who truly enjoyed work.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Gladys Hodge; a brother-in-law, Bland N. Hodge; a niece, Mary A. Tenerowizc; and a nephew, Bland N. Hodge Jr.
She is survived by five nieces, Judy Kincaid and husband Glenn of Staunton; Doris Bartee and husband Ron of Myrtle Beach, SC; Janet Gray of Sherwood, Wisc.; and Patsy Hupman, Diana Wilson and husband Jim, all of Fishersville; two nephews, Charles Hodge and wife Debbie of Raphine, and Robert “Doc” Hodge of Middlebrook; and special family and friends, Blanche Hodge, Elva Carpenter, Anita Cauley, Cindy and Gary Smith, Evelyn Ryder, Dot May, Tom and Sue McRoberts, Cindy Gray and Joan Popp.
A funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, with the Rev. Glenn Coleman officiating.
Burial was in Williamsville Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Robert, Wayne and Allen Keyser, Larry and Nathan Tenerowicz and Kevin Robertson. Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.
