Grace Pauline “Polly” Moore Newlon, age 88, of Hightown, VA., passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006. Polly was born in Richmond, VA., to George Edward Moore and Martha Jane Meeks. She was the youngest of nine and was preceded in death by her siblings, Jesse, Sandy, Mary, Ruth, Ralph, Lee, Virginia and Willie. Polly married John Calhoun Newlon, Jr., in 1938. They had six children, John Calhoun Newlon III (deceased), Shayne Walker of Portland, OR, Elaine Perkinson and husband, W. Baxter Perkinson of Richmond, Rebecca Sharron and husband, Olen Sharron of Pearisburg, Maeve Crowgey and husband, Terry Crowgey of Roanoke and Polly Newlon and husband, Keith Carson of Hightown. She was also survived by 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Polly was reared in Richmond and attended public schools, graduating from George Marshall High School where she met her husband, Jack. She attended Westhampton College in Richmond prior to marriage. Thereafter, she and Jack moved to Washington, D.C., where she reared six children and worked for Safeway Stores, Inc. for 17 years. She and Jack found their third and true home in Hightown to which they moved in 1975.
They jumped right into farming and, with the help of Highland friends and neighbors, raised sheep and other beloved animals for a number of years. Her love of Highland and the friends she made were the inspiration to keep her going after losing Jack late in 1996. Over the years she attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hot Springs, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in New Hampden and Monterey United Methodist Church in Monterey. In addition to her well known loves and activities, she was also a writer and poet, a musician, and philosopher. Her indomitable spirit, lilting voice, and ever present smile will always live in the hearts of her family and those who knew her. Perhaps the greatest gift she has passed to her family is the gift of Highland. Polly truly loved all creatures great and small and in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Highland SPCA, P.O. Box 6, Monterey, VA 24465. Interment will be beside her husband at Emmanuel Church of Brook Hill in Richmond. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
