Gladys (Hammer) Newman, 82, died Saturday night, January 25, 1992 in King's Daughters' Hospital.
She was born September 24, 1909 in Blue Grass, a daughter of Luther and Ester (Waybright) Hammer.
She was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church and attended Monterey Presbyterian and Monterey United Methodist Church. She was a member of Monterey United Methodist Women.
Her husband, William Jason Newman, died September 25, 1979; as well as four brothers, John F., Leonard H., Robert, and Luther Hammer Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Marlene N. Reynolds and husband, John B. of Monterey; three sisters, Virginia H. Rexrode of Franklin, WV, Leona H. Gutshall of Monterey and Marie H. Newman of Blue Grass; four brothers, Glen of Monterey, Elmer C. of Staunton, and James B. and William C. Hammer, both of Waynesboro; and two grandchildren, Marilyn R. Starkey of Rocky Mount and William R. Reynolds of Monterey; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah R. Starkey of Rocky Mount..
A service will be conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Revs. David Schill, C. William Cox and Jerry Ginn.
Burial will be in Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ed, Dine, Gene and Robert G. Hammer, Charles D. Rexrode; Dale, Ralph Jr., Harold and Dr. Douglas Newman.
Friends may call at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Reynolds in Monterey at any time and also at Obaugh Funeral Home at any time.
