Gilbert Clinton Simmons, 82, of Sugar Grove, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Bridgewater Retirement Community.
Mr. Simmons was born Jan. 29, 1923, at Sugar Grove, and was the son of the late Solomon Roy and Cora Mae Bodkin Simmons.
He was a member of Crummett Run Church of the Brethren. He was a retired school bus driver from Pendleton County and also a farmer. He had also worked for the CC Camps as a young man. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both the Pacific and European Theaters, having received two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 9666 in Sugar Grove.
On May 20, 1950, he married Marie Virginia Wilfong Simmons; she preceded him in death April 17, 2000.
Surviving are four brothers, Vernon Simmons of Staunton, Hobert Simmons of Romney, W.Va., William Simmons of Moyers, W.Va. and Alvin Simmons of Moyers, W.Va., and a number of nieces nephews.
The Rev. Jerry Smith and Patrick Godfrey will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, at Crummett Run Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
