George Marvin Botkin, 100, of McDowell died Sunday, August 11, 2002 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
He was born June 21, 1902 at Doe Hill a son of George Lee and Naomi Blagg Botkin.
Mr. Botkin made his home at Waynesboro Manor Assisted Living Home for two and one-half years.
He was well known for raising turkeys, calves, sheep and pigs. He grew buckwheat and thrashed grain for people up and down the valley into West Virginia. He hauled livestock to market almost every week. He often remarked “I had a steering wheel in my hands all my life.” He was a lifetime member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club, having held several offices and attending many conventions. He received a 50 year plaque for perfect attendance and also received a plaque for his 100th birthday from the Stonewall Ruritan Club.
He was a member of the McDowell United Methodist Church.
Mr. Botkin was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Sensabaugh Botkin, two sons, Ray and Leo “Bussy” Botkin; a daughter, Fay Armstrong; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bernadine and Harold Wimer of Staunton; two sons, Clude Botkin of McDowell and Clarence “Frosty” Botkin of Ft. Worth, Texas; a son-in-law Dennis Armstrong, Jr. of Deerfield, Jr. of Deerfield; seven grandchildren, Joyce Boyers, Sandra Peters, Brenda Duke, Patsy, Roger, David and Mike Botkin; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. David Anderson.
Burial will be in the Doe Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Glen Botkin, Jr., Richard Bokin, Charles Varner, Lee Blagg, David Botkin, Russell Peters, Roger Botkin and Nelson Boyers.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Stonewall Ruritan Club.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
