George Ellsworth McWhorter, Jr. 78, of Monterey died Saturday, March 1, 1997 at Augusta Medical Center.
He was born October 11, 1918 at Milledgeville, Georgia, the sone of George Ellsworth McWhorter and May DeSaussure.
Mr. McWhorter spent four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. He graduated from Auburn University in 1940 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He and his wife, Jean, moved to Highland County in 1976 where he worked for Daniel Construction Company for ten years at the Vepco Bath County Pumped Storage Project as Quality Control engineer. He was resident engineer on a number of other projects including the Sunshine Bridge over the Mississippi River and the Interstate 10 Mobil River Tunnel. He was a pioneer in the use of the constructed wetlands sewage treatment process and was a partner in Highland Engineering, P.L.C. He served the town of Monterey for 18 years on the Monterey Town Council, the last 14 years as Mayor. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. McWhorter is survived by his wife, Jean McWhorter; one daughter, Mary Margaret McWhorter Clouse of Louisville, Ky.; two sone, Thomas E. McWhorter of Allentown, Pa. and Albert P. McWhorter of Norman, Ok.; two step-sons, Mark M. Watson of Nashville, Tenn. and William W. Watson III of San Francisco, Ca.; one sister, Mrs. J.D. Todd, Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; ten grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, March 4, 1997 at 2 p.m. in the Monterey Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Bill Moore. Burial will be in the Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Tom Atkeson, Don Hower, John Lohr, Dr. T.E. Billingsley, Tom Adams, C.B. Fox, Jr., Bill Royster and Jerry Stanley.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Monterey Town Council and other friends attending.
The family will receive from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday evening at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Medical Center, PO Box 490; Highland County Rescue Squad, PO Box 268 or the Highland County Public Library, Monterey, Va. 24465.
