Eugene Kenton Mitchell, 90, of Head Waters, passed away Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehab.
He was born Dec. 5, 1921, the son of the late Gilbert and Lillie Kate Armstrong Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell attended McDowell High School and was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. A livestock farmer, Eugene enjoyed working on the family farm and caring for his animals, especially when his nieces and nephews would work alongside him.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by a sister, Joy Smith of Head Waters; three nieces, Dawn Armstrong of Head Waters, Jean Higgins of Churchville and Linda Gail Johnson of Waynesboro; and a nephew, Gary Campbell of Afton.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Mitchell; a sister, Mary Campbell; half-brother, Glenn Armstrong; and nephew, Robert “Sonny” Smith.
A funeral service was conducted 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Beth Pyles and Pastor Bob Johnson officiating.
Burial followed at Head Waters Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Elmo and Steve Varner, Nelson Simmons, Ronnie Miller, Ronnie Armstrong and Kenton Smith.
