Ernest Hartley Lightner Sr., 65, of Monterey died Monday, October 17, 1994 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 20, 1928 at Valley Center and was a son of the late Harry R. and Bessie (Cleek) Lightner.

On November 22, 1950 he married Rebecca Harold who survives of Monterey.

He was a member of the Green Hill Church and had been a school bus driver in Bath County for a number of years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law; Ernest Jr.  "Ernie" and Brenda Lightner, David and Dorothy Lightner, Herbert "Herb" and Teresa Lightner, all of Monterey and Raymond and Jill Lightner of Head Waters; brother, Harry Lightner Jr. of Staunton; two sisters, Trane Bogan and Leta Brown Wimer, both of Staunton; 11 grandchildren, Christine, Melissa, Tray, Matt, Robert, Jacob, Ryan, Corey and Tyler Lightner, all of Monterey and Amanda and Chad Lightner, both of Head Waters; 21 nieces and 12 nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Lightner and 2 brothers, Vernon and Robert Lightner.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Haley and Rev. C. William Cox. Burial will be in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Eldon Galford, Matlin Hull, Benny Colaw, Herman Puffenbarger, Harry Simmons, Charlie Armstrong and Carlton Hull.

Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, Va. 24465.
