Dr. John Beveridge

NASHVILLE, TN Dr. John Harmon Beveridge, age 97, of Nashville, TN died on May 28, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Reed Munson Beveridge; his granddaughter, Anne Taylor Beveridge; his parents, Isaac Luther and Clara Seybert Beveridge and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by daughters, Lucinda Beveridge Wilds (David), Anne Beveridge Wallace (Jake), and son, Mark Stockton Beveridge (Nancy); grandchildren, Reed Harwell Harrison, Jonathan McKelvey Harwell, Paige Wilds Kern, Tracey Ann Wilds, John Beveridge Wallace, Virginia Wallace Dolezal, Anne Wallace Nesbitt, Johnson Bransford Wallace, Jr., Elena Wallace Graves, Elizabeth Wallace Taylor, Elizabeth Reed Beveridge, Mark Stockton Beveridge, Jr., Gloria Bond Beveridge and Henry Seybert Beveridge; 21 great grandchildren; a sister Lucinda and a brother Charles. The descendant of a pioneer first family of Virginia, John Harmon Beveridge was born on June 14, 1916 in Monterey, VA, a small town in the Allegheny Mountains bordering the Shenandoah Valley surrounded by National Forests and the headwaters of the James and Potomac rivers. This place, where he spent his childhood, inspired his lifelong love of nature and early American history. Among other things he could recognize most every bird by its song and every tree by its bark. Although his father was a surveyor and County Clerk, he also farmed land long owned by his family. When John was a child, he did literally walk several miles to help feed the cattle before breakfast. Thus began his strong work ethic. He remarked throughout his life how much his growing up years meant to him. John was the sixth of nine children all of whom earned advanced degrees in their respective fields. After graduating from Monterey High School, John attended the University of Virginia where he earned his undergraduate (1941) and medical (1944) degrees. While at the University, he met his wife, Helen Reed Munson, from Connellsville, PA, who was a student at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. They married on September 18, 1942. During World War II, John was a Captain in the U.S. Army and was post surgeon at A. P. Hill Military Reservation. After an internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, he came to Nashville to do his residency in radiology at the Veterans Administration Hospital where he was Chief Radiology Resident from 1949 to 1950. Thereafter, he joined the radiology practice, then known as McClure, Lanier, Ivie and Beveridge. The practice grew and ultimately became Radiology Associates, now known as Radiology Alliance, P.C. John practiced medicine for more than 50 years and was a member of the radiology faculty at Vanderbilt Medical School from 1950 until his retirement there as Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science, Emeritus, in 1995. He served on the hospital staffs at Veterans Administration Hospital, General Hospital, St. Thomas Hospital, Baptist Hospital and Vanderbilt Hospital. He was a member of many professional societies and organizations including the American Medical Association, Tennessee Medical Association, Nashville Academy of Medicine and Davidson County Medical Society (Board of Directors), American College of Radiology (Fellow), Radiological Society of North America, Tennessee Radiological Society (Past President), Middle Tennessee Radiological Society (Past President) and the Roentgen Ray Society. John was a past President of the Middle Tennessee Heart Association and formerly a board member of the Davidson County Cancer Society, a member of the Nashville Rotary Club, the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Advisory Committee for the Medical Alumni Association of The University of Virginia, Belle Meade Country Club, Farmington Country Club, The University Club and a member and former Deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church. John was a dedicated and caring physician who was highly respected in his field. He had many interests and hobbies and was an accomplished painter, gardener and naturalist and an avid reader and collector of books. He loved the outdoors, particularly in the mountains of his native Virginia where he will be buried with a family graveside service. Above all, he was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who was loved by his family. The visitation with his family will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 5-7 pm.
