David Hinkle Hiner, 71, of Doe Hill, died at his home on Thursday, September 2, 1999. He was born in Highland County near Mustoe on February 3, 1928 a son of Harry Tucker and Mary Katherine (Harris) Hiner.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, a mechanic in Monterey for many years, working for Hammer’s and later Mauzy’s Garage. He was a self-employed plumber. He was a member of the Set Free Foursquare Fellowship Church in Bolar.
After his retirement, he mounted the family’s old gristmill onto a trailer and he could be found grinding corn meal at the Maple Frestival each spring and at various festivals, fairs and carnivals in surrounding counties all year.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Virginia (Puffenbarger) Hiner of Doe Hill, a daughter and son-in-law, Nina (Susie) and John E. Puffenbarger of Mt. Solon; a son and daughter-in-law, David Hinkle Jr. and Norma Hiner of Deerfield; a step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Johnny and Kathy Puffenbarger of Doe Hill; two granddaughters, April Puffenbarger and Jennifer Hiner and two step-grandsons, Jimmy and Billy Puffenbarger; three sisters, Mary Alice McCook of Cloucester Point, Mrs. Mark (Letia Pearl) Buzzard of Hot Springs, Mrs. John (Charlotte Ann) Vogel of Fort Washington, Penn. And four brothers, Harry “Cooge” Hiner of Ronceverte, W.Va., Sam Hiner of Hot Springs and Roy “Boss” Hiner of Summersville, W.Va.
Mr. Hiner was preceded in death by two grandsons, Ernest Edward and Harry Edward Puffenbarger and a step-grandson, Michael Wayne Puffenbarger and a brother, Joe and a sister, Daisy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, September 6, 1999 at Obaugh Funeral Home by pastor Mike Puffenbarger.
Burial will be in the Head Waters Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Kyle Obaugh, Jim Armstrong, Robin Vance, Sonny Varner, Ernie Lightner, Jim White, Jimmy Sponaugle and Harry Sponaugle.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 Sunday afternoon and from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.
