Constance "Connie" Waggy

Constance “Connie” Bird Waggy, 94, of Staunton and formerly of Monterey, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at King’s Daughters’ Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 17, 1908 in Highland County, a daughter of William N. and Rubinia Gum Bird.

On March 25, 1970, she was married to the late George Russell Waggy.

She retired March 31, 1976, after 38 years of service as director of Public Welfare in Highland County. She was a lifelong member of the Monterey Presbyterian Church and attended Christ United Methodist Church in Staunton. She was a graduate of Dunmore Business College and a charter member of Business and Professional Women’s Club in Highland County.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, George H. Graham, and a brother, Frank Bird.

She is survived by three step-daughters and their husbands, Lois W. and James H. Marshall of Staunton, Doris W. and Jim Rexrode of Fincastle and Nancy W. and Lee Coffman of Waynesboro; a sister-in-law Lavenia Bird of Monterey; a special cousin, Addie Jane Milton of Crozet; eight step-grandchildren, Jimmy, Danny and Steve Marshall, Tammy Briggs, Terry Ceola, Eddie Rexrode, Georgia Crump and Leigh Ann Quesenberry; and sixteen step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. C. Willilam Cox.

Burial was in Monterey Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were William and Preston Gentry, Jimmy, Danny and Steve Marshall and Eddie Rexrode.

Honorary pallbearers were friends and neighbors attending the service.
