Cleveland “Dune” Moats, Jr., 67, of Verona, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Augusta Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1941 in Highland County a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Lillie Mae (Malcom) Moats.
Mr. Moats served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He had worked for BFI Trash Co. /Allied Waste in Manassas for 35 years and did home construction. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Byron, James “Ed” and Gilbert Moats and three sisters, Lucy Koiner, Virginia Simmons and Margie VanPelt.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Moats of Verona; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jody Tobialt of Stafford; a special dog, “Buster”; special nephew, Homer Moats of Verona; special niece, Ethel Simmons of Churchville; a brother, William Smith of Staunton; a sister, Betty Woolridge of Churchville and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. Burial will be in West Augusta Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Homer Moats, David Hanger, Scott Myers, Richard Moats, Byron Moats, Sr., Rudy Zwecker, William Woolridge and Michael Woolridge. Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Ethel Simmons, 292 Crawford Drive, Churchville.
