Clarence Puffenbarger

April 27, 1911 — October 22, 1999

Clarence Ivan “C.I.” Puffenbarger, 88, died Friday, October 22, 1999 at Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg.

He was born April 27, 1911 at Blue Grass, a son of Albie and Sadie (Simmons) Puffenbarger.

He was a graduate of Dunsmore Business College and once owned and operated a general store in new Hampden and had been a night auditor at the Homestead Hotel at Hot Springs.

He was a farmer and life-time horseback rider, having last rode a horse at the age of 82. He was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church and served on the Highland County School Board for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Melvin Puffenbarger; and a grandson, Craig Puffenbarger who died in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Lillian (Rexrode) Puffenbarger of Blue Grass, whom he married April 15, 1940; a son and daughter-in-law, Herman and Ann Puffenbarger of blue Grass; two sisters, Anna Margaret Axel of Staunton and Marie Rexrode of Hightown; three granddaughters, Vickie Newton of Roanoke, Misty and Nicole Puffenbarger of Blue Grass; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Chapel United Methodist church by the Revs. Joseph C. Bradford and Richard S. Gibson.

Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ivan Puffenbarger, Dareld Puffenbarger, Julian Rexrode, Marlin G. Rexrode, Roy Puffenbarger, Scott Smith and Paxton Grant.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Varner, Berlie T. Swecker, Delmar Rexrode, Carl Rexrode, Ralph Rexrode, Steve Puffenbarger, Don Lanham, Roger Simmons, Jim Pitsenbarger, Dr. T.E. Billingsley, Richard Hevener, W.G. Ervine, Jamie Will, David Lightner and Henry and Steve Bird.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home.
