Charles Gum

November 3, 1922 — April 11, 2002

Charles Ray Gum, 79, died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at Avante at Harrisonburg.

He was born Nov. 3, 1922, at Forks of the Water, Highland County, a son of Charles D. and Minnie Catherine Simmons Gum.

He was a member of the United Brethren Church and served in the Army during World War II. He was a route tire salesman.

He was preceded in death by Archie and French Gum of Monterey and Billy Gum of Woodstock.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Crummett Gum of Penn Laird, whom he married August 16, 1974; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Shirkey of Penn Laird and Kathy Lam and her husband, Steve, of Weyers Cave; two sons, Larry and Terry Gum of Harrisonburg; four sisters, Mabel Samples of Monterey, Matie Rexrode of Franklin, W.Va., Helen Helmick of Mount Crawford and Dorothy Hedrick of Blue Grass; one brother, June Gum of Springfield; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Obaugh Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Gin officiating. Burial will be at the Puffenbarger Cemetery near Monterey.

Pallbearers will be Johnathon Lam, Steve Lam II, Brent Pearl, Roger Wolf, Robert Wolf II, Lynn Rexrode and Wesley Morris.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
