Charles “Billy” William Grant, 85, of McDowell, went to meet his Lord and Savior Friday, April 5, 2024 at the home of his sister.
He was born in Staunton, October 21, 1938, a son of the late Charles Roy and Janet Ruth (Lockridge) Grant.
A devout Christian, Billy was truly a man after God’s own heart, reaching the lost and praying for those in need. He was raised in McDowell United Methodist Church and held membership with Word of Faith Church, where he faithfully served as an elder and lay speaker. Billy was also a member of the former Full Gospel Business Men’s Association. He enjoyed reading his Bible and other inspirational books, as well as watching Christian programs on television. He was an intercessor, an encourager, listener, friend, and true giver of his time and talents. He lived his faith and was well known for handing out little silver crosses to everyone with a “Someone Loves You” added. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need and was never too busy to comfort a hurting soul, pray for the sick, or listen to a new revelation from an excited believer. He loved reading The Recorder to keep up with the local news, and it helped him to know who to pray for and how to pray. Billy was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. Above all, he will be remembered for the love he shared for his natural and spiritual family, and for his loyalty to God, his country, and the community he did so much for.
A master mason by trade, Billy’s work can be seen throughout the community in churches, houses, and buildings, as well as many other locations. Additionally, he was a former member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club and McDowell Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shelby Jean (Hevener) Grant; son, Jeffrey Wayne Grant; and brother, Roy Lee Grant; father- and mother-in-law, Elmer and Lucy Hevener; brothers-in-law, Edwin Hevener and Amos Rexrode; and sisters-in-law, Mary Grant and Shirley Rexrode.
Billy is survived by his son, Keith Alan Grant of McDowell; sister, Janet Hevener and husband, Donnie of McDowell; brother, Gene Grant and wife, Shirley of Swoope; daughter-in-law, Susan Grant of McDowell; former daughter-in-law and friend, Kari Grant of Raleigh, N.C.; grandsons, Shawn Grant and wife, Anna and T.J. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the Stonewall Ruritan Club building in McDowell with Rev. Chip Hill, Pastor Mike Puffenbarger and Rev. Earl Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery.
