Catherine Elizabeth Palmer, 98, of Orange, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at Dogwood Village of Orange County. She was born July 25, 1916 in Monterey, a daughter of the late Charles Richard and Louise Puffenbarger Gum. Mrs. Palmer was a homemaker, and member of the Monterey United Methodist Church, as well as the former Seybert Chapel. Catherine will always be remembered for her love for her cats. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Tines Palmer; and two brothers, Alvie Richard Gum and William Robert Gum Sr. Surviving family members include her nephews, Richard Gum of Woodbridge and William "Bill" Gum of Monterey; her sister-in-law, Hannah Gum of Monterey; nephew-in-law and caregiver, Pete Puffenbarger of Locust Grove; and nephew-in-law, Kenny Hopkins of Bridgewater. A host of extended family members also survive. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Richard Gum, Ray Gum, Terry Stevens Jr., Scotty Stevens, Tracy Triplett, and Billy Triplett.
