Carl Hammer

Carl Eugene “Gene” Hammer, 76, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at his home.

He was born October 1, 1924 at Blue Grass, a son of Glen and Mona Mullenax Hammer.

On August 14, 1946, he married Betty Warner Hammer.

He operated Hammer Chevrolet for 45 years. He was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church. He served in the Army during WWII in Germany. He was a quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4989, a member of the Monterey Lions Club for 51 years, a charter member of the Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad. He has served on the Monterey Town Council since April 1972 and was appointed mayor in January 1997, serving as mayor until September 1998. He returned to the Monterey Town Council serving to the present time.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale R. Hammer.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hammer of Monterey; a daughter, Olivia Lee Hammer of Monterey; three sons, C.W. and Dale, both of Monterey and Michael Hammer of Blue Grass; six granddaughters; two great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; a brother Glen Hammer of Monterey.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Revs. Stephanie Wilson and Jerry Ginn, with burial in Monterey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Houston Smith, Jack Warner, Ernie Lightner Jr., Marian Hawsey, Bill Niswander, Bill Banks and Billy McFadden.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lions Club, Fire Department and the Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
