Retired Navy Capt. Alexander James Barton, 74, of Monterey, died Wednesday, January 6, 1999 at his residence.
He was born on May 9, 1924, at Mt. Pleasant, Pa., a son of Paul Carnahan and Barbara (Eggers) Barton.
He was a member of Monterey Presbyterian Church. He was a certified lay speaker serving Presbyterian congregations at Circleville, Big Run and Elk Mountain, WV for siz years. He spent 40 years in the Navy, active and reserves, and retired from the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., as a program director with 30 years of service. He was a member of Monterey Town Council, and served eight years and an accredited rose judge and consulting rosarian for the American Rose Society.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Arlene (Arment) Barton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra B. and Tony R. Stinnett of Monterey and Lynne B. and Joseph V. Kier Jr. of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Alexander James III and Jeanne L. Barton of Somerville; a sister, Jean B. Sundahl of Savannah, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Todd, Kelly, Paige, Joanie, Jamie, Sharon, Chris and Eric; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Barton and Geraldine Boaz; and a brother-in-law, E. Richard Arment.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Monterey Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James C. Moore, with burial in Monterey Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Todd and Tony Stinnett, James, Chris and Eric Barton and Joe Bier.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The casket will be closed. The body is at Obaugh Funeral Home.
