Bruce Rice Richardson Jr.

Bruce Rice Richardson Jr., 75, died Saturday, April 9, 1994 in King's Daughters Hospital.

He was born in Clifton Forge December 11, 1918, a don of Bruce Rice and Haseltine (Leech) Richardson. He had lived in Monterey since 1961.

His earlier life was spent in Hot Springs. He lived in Charlottesville for many years. He was educated in the Bath County Public Schools and attended the University of Virginia. He served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He had an active life and four full careers. He was a hotel man, trout farmer, real estate broker and writer. He was assistant manager of the Homestead in Hot Springs and general manager of the Thomas Jefferson Inn in Charlottesville. He operated the Mimslyn Inn at Luray with others.

He was also employed at Breakers in Palm Springs, FL and the Mayflower in Washington, D.C.

He was president of the Virginia Hotel and Motel Association in 1957 and the youngest person to ever hold that position. He was a past vice president of the Southern Hotel Association.

He was on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Travel Council and was active in many travel organizations.

In 1961 he founded the Virginia Trout Company in Monterey and was a member of the Board of Directors at the time of his death. He was a former president of the U.S. Trout Farmers Association and a pioneer in the development of fish farming.

He revived an old family real estate business in the mid 1960s and was head of Richardson Real Estate Company in Monterey.

He was active in conservation organizations. He was founder and president of the ruffed grouse society. Over the years he was a member of Trout Unlimited and the American Fisheries Society. He was an avid golfer, fisher and hunter.

He was executive director of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce  for many years and served as the chairman of the Highland County School Board.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Sullenberger Richardson; four daughters, Patricia R. Czermak of Atlanta, Ga. Mary R. Sullivan of Portland, Ore., Linda R. O'Hearn of Mustoe and Jennifer Richardson of Monterey; a son, Thomas R. Richardson of Monterey; a sister, Elinor Moses of Tamarac, Fla.; a brother, Thomas L. Richardson of Dallas; and seven grandchildren.

A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Monterey Cemetery by the Revs. Robert Haley and C. William Cox. There will be no public viewing and the family will receive friends at Monterey United Methodist Church following the service.
