Billy Warren Hannah, 78, of Mustoe, died Thursday, October 11, 2001 at Reston Hospital, following a heart attack suffered while visiting his sister in northern Virginia.

He was born near Slatyfork in Pocahontas Co., West Virginia, on October 14, 1922, a son of Hugh Amos and Lovie Sabina Hannah. He attended school in West Virginia and in Highland County, entering the United States Coast Guard on October 8, 1942. He saw WWII service in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, and California before being discharged as a S1C on November 11, 1945 at Norfolk, Va. He returned to Highland County, graduating from Monterey High School in 1946 and then working in his family’s lumber business. He re-enlisted in the Coast Guard again from November 30, 1948 to April 11, 1950. He married Charlotte Ann Hull on May 9, 1949, and they later divorced. Mr. Hannah continued to work for Hannah Lumber and was also employed by The Homestead for a time.

Mr. Hannah is survived by two sisters, Lucille H. Lahti of Herndon and Hazel H. Corbett of Mustoe; one nephew, Kyle H. Hannah of Anchorage, Alaska; four nieces, Sharon H. Fisher of Marlinton, W.Va., Betty Louise Clay of White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Elizabeth Allebaugh Volard of West Palm Beach, Fla., Sarah Carrington Petrus of Verona and Mary Ann Avery of Stephensville, Md. He is also survived my a host of great-nephews and –nieces, two of whom lived close to him, Joyce Ralston and Mike High, both of Monterey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marjorie Collins and Ethel High; two brothers, Hubert and Fred Hannah; and his son, Bruce Hull Hannah.

The family will receive friends at Obaugh Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 14. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Donald Rose at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 15, followed by burial in Monterey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael High, Lucian Petras, Bruce Avery, Herb Fisher Jr., Berlie Terry, Delmas Doyle, Chris Hicks, Michael Ralston, Richard Hicks, Buddy Hunt, Donald Doyle and Michael Humphries.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland County Rescue Squad or charity of your choice.
