Betty Ann (Hammer) Hogshead, 59, of McDowell, died Wednesday afternoon, March 17, 1993 at the University of Virginia Hospital.
She was born October 18, 1933 at Blue Grass, a daughter of Virginia (Wimer) Hammer of Monterey and the late Leonard Hammer.
On June 15, 1953, she married Charles H. Hogshead, who died January 26, 1988.
Mrs. Hogshead was an elder and choir member of the McDowell Presbyterian Church, the Women of the Church and the Bull Pasture Extension Homemakers' Club. She and her husband, Charles, operated Hogshead Grocery for 30 years.
She was active in the Highland Cancer Society, serving on the board of directors and as chairperson for the Stonewall District Crusade. In 1991, she won the Volunteer Award for the Highland County Cancer Unit.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, George Leonard Hogshead of Matthews, N.C.; a sister, Sandra H. Bratton of Warm Springs; two granddaughters, Laura Hope and Sarah Ashley Hogshead and a grandson, Charles Gregory Hogshead, all of Matthews, N.C.; and two nieces, Shawna and Shelley Bratton.
A son, Gregory Hogshead, preceded her death, June 12, 1982.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home with Rev. Lester LaPrade officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Grass Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Darwin King, Benny Ralston, Bob and Gene Hammer, John Reynolds, John Wagner, Shannon Malloy and Leo McCray.
