Betty Hammer

Betty Warner Hammer, 76, of Monterey, died Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at her residence.

She was born January 25, 1927, in Pendleton County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Sewell Jackson, Sr. and Ruth Gutshall Warner.

On August 14, 1946, she married Carl Eugene Hammer, who preceded her in death May 14, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a brother, I.G. Warner.

Mrs. Hammer was a homemaker. She was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Highland County Rescue Squad, a member of the Highland County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Monterey Home Demonstration Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Olivia Lee Hammer of Monterey; three sons, C.W. Hammer of Monterey, Mike Hammer and his wife, Sandra of Blue Grass and Dale Hammer of Monterey; a sister Rosa Lou Hawn and her husband, Don, of Kingsport, Tenn.; a brother S. Jack Warner Jr. of Mustoe; seven granddaughters, Gail Arnott of Monterey, Casey and Candace Hammer of Burnsville, Melinda Hammer of Blue Grass, Amy Jo and Alisha Hammer of Staunton, Vickie Gragg of Harrisonburg; five great-grandchildren, Dustin Layton, Savannah and Noah Arnott, Ashley Gragg and Tyler Cupp; a number of nieces and nephews and two special caregivers, Sherry Ann Lowry and Bernice smith.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, October 24 at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Sullivan, the Rev. Donald E. Rose, the Rev. Darren Massey and the Rev. Chip Hill.

Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Warner, Perry Warner, Marion Hawsey, Billy McFadden, Jimmy Varner and Ernie Lightner.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Highland County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
