Audrey Simmons

Audrey Ritchie Simmons, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on February 22, 2022. She was born in Blue Grass, Virginia, as was her late husband, Eugene Douglas Simmons, the love of her life. Audrey is survived by a daughter, Ann Simmons and daughter-in-law Susan Mello of NY, loving family members, very dear neighbors and close friends, and one adorable neighbor cat who loved to sneak over to her house for long visits.

Mrs. Simmons was a graduate of Broadway High School and the Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, VA, where she received her R.N. Degree. She retired from the nursing profession after 39 years, during which time she served as a Public Health, Hospital, Private Duty, Doctor’s Office, and Pediatric Nurse. She is a member of the Virginia Nurses Association and the Alumnae Association of the Stuarts Circle Hospital. After having spent the majority of their professional lives in Manassas and Richmond, Doug and Audrey retired to Augusta County.

Mrs. Simmons enjoyed taking care of her flower garden and feeding the backyard birds. She possessed an appreciation of art, thoroughly enjoyed visiting museums, and fondly remembered her trips to New York City. Audrey created beautiful needlepoint designs, and she refinished many antiques with her husband over the years. She loved Highland County and possessed a wealth of information about the area. Audrey was adored by family members and friends who would love nothing more than visiting and hearing stories from days gone by.

In keeping with her wishes, her body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Audrey’s honor may be sent to Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, 10 Manor Road, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477 or Blue Grass Cemetery, 3042 Blue Grass Valley Road, Blue Grass, VA 24413.
