Arthur “Dwight” Harper, Sr. age 85, of Monterey, died Sunday, February 12, 2006 at his home. He was born June 11, 1920 in Highland County near Forks of Water a son of the late Doc and Maggie (Lambert) Harper.
Mr. Harper spent the majority of his life as a brick mason and farmer. He was a former member of Harper’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served in the European Theatre.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joey Brock, two sisters and a brother.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys (Warner) Harper, a son, A. Dwight Harper, Jr. of Upper Tract, WV; three daughters, Phyllis Brock of Mill Gap, Karen Rexrode of Monterey and Debra Parker of Monterey; eight grandchildren, Bridgette Harper Allen, Jeanette Harper Weeks, Sheryl Brock Herber, Stacey M. Rexrode, April Rexrode Armstrong, Ryan P. Harper, Aaron F. Harper and Zachary T. Vandevander; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 16, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Danny L. Williams, Sr. Burial with military honors will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin, WV.
Active pallbearers will be Ryan and Aaron Harper, Zachary Vandevander, Ian and Luke Allen and Sean Weeks. Flowers girls will be granddaughters.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
