Arnet “Buster” Patterson Gum, 84, of Monterey, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Augusta Medical Center. He was born June 19, 1917 at Monterey a son of the late Arnet Peter and Lillian Lee (Trimble) Gum.
Mr. Gum was a local farmer. He retired from Vepco and was an agent for Travelers Insurance Company. He was a watchmaker in Australia.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a survivor of the attack of Pearl Harbor. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Gum.
He is survived by a son, John Gum of Canberra, Australia; six grandchildren, Anthony, Michelle, Matthew, James, Catherine and Andrew Gum of Australia; a cousin and caregiver, Joyce Bradshaw of Veron and a special friend and caregiver, Conley Colaw of Blue Grass. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. James W. “Bill” Moore and Homer Glover.
Burial will be in the Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Austin Shepherd, Garland Dever, Doug Gutshall, Jack Herold, Kelly Harvel, Harold Ford, Eugene Ratcliffe and Jerry Hooke.
Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Hooke, Jimmy Varner, Gaye Herold, Sue Puffenbarger and Ross Hefner.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Friday evening at the funeral home.
