MONTEREY Arnet Emory Gutshall, age 92, of Monterey, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born March 7, 1923 in Vanderpool, a son of the late Ray Kyle and Florence (Corbett) Gutshall. On December 14, 1962 he was wed to Mary Ellen Gum. A WWII veteran, Mr. Gutshall served in the US Navy as an Aviation Machinist's Mate on both the U.S.S. Wasp and U.S.S. Hornet. He was a member of Victory Chapel Advent Christian Church, where he served as an Elder and taught Sunday School for many years. A lifelong bluegrass musician, he was a founding member of the Fiddle and Bow Club and 2014 recipient of the Highland County Fiddler's Association's Legacy Award. Many will remember Arnet from his album "Too Old to Die Young", which he recorded at age 85. By trade Mr. Gutshall worked as a painter and paper hanger. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gutshall was predeceased by two sons, David and Allen Gutshall; three brothers, R.K., Earl, and Harold Gutshall; and one sister, Elizabeth Moody. Surviving in addition to his wife of 52 years, are two daughters, Jean McElwee and husband, Gene of Hot Springs, and Devonia Rexrode and husband, Ron of Staunton; three sons, Grady Gutshall of Dowling Park, FL., Eddie Gutshall and wife, Jessie of Goochland, and James Gutshall of Ontario, Canada; a sister, Ruth Anne Mullenax and husband, Owen of Nokesville; 7 grandchildren; 11great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews also survive. A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Dennis Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday evening at Obaugh Funeral Home. Active Pallbearers will be Allan Lowry, Charles Smith, Ezra Halterman, Randy Harold, Tom Mullenax, Kevin Gutshall, Ronald Gutshall, Daniel Rawley, and Carson Ralston. Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer Waybright, Richard Waybright, Rudy Armstrong, Jimmy Hiner, John David Colaw, Eugene Ratcliff, Bill Wagner, Allen Lowry, Billy Pritt, Charlie Hupman, Bill Harmon, Delmar Shifflett, as well as members of the Fiddle and Bow Club.
