Anna McCray

February 2, 1927 — November 13, 2016

Anna Lee McCray, 89, of Monterey and formerly of Head Waters passed away Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Avante at Harrisonburg.  She was born February 2, 1927 in Doe Hill a daughter of the late William Ernest and Vernie Catherine (Armstrong) Botkin.

Mrs. McCray served as postmaster at Head Waters Post Office for 20 years.  She was a member of the former Head Waters Church of the Brethren, attended Head Waters Presbyterian Church, and past member of the McDowell Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.  Anna Lee loved needlework, time spent reading and playing rook, and looked forward to family visits on the weekends.  Additionally, she will be remembered for her lemon meringue pies, applesauce cakes, and homemade rolls.

On December 21, 1945, she married William “Peyton” McCray, who preceded her in death on February 8, 1987.  She was also predeceased by her son, Charles “Chuck” Botkin; an infant son, Sherwood McCray; sisters, Vergie “Peggy” James and Dorothy Hupman; and her brother, Leeson Botkin.

Surviving family members include her daughters, Sandra L. Snyder and husband, Carson of Head Waters, Barbara J. Warner and husband, Jerry of Vinton, and Vivian L. Terry and husband, Bobby of Monterey; her son, William P.  McCray, Jr. and wife, Susan of Staunton; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Wilma Wimer of Staunton and Alice “Poodle” Shifflett of Harrisonburg; as well as brothers, Roscoe Botkin and Joseph Botkin, both of Staunton and Weldon “Bud” Botkin of Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev.  Andre Crummett officiating.  Burial will follow in Head Waters Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Trent and Brad Warner, David Snyder, William McCray, III, Chris Simmons and Steven Layne.  Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
