Alvie Gum

February 25, 1910 — December 12, 2003

Alvie Richard Gum, 93, of Monterey, died Friday, December 12, 2003 at Oak Hill Center, now Ruxton Health of Staunton.

He was born February 25, 1910 at Monterey, a son of the late Charlie R. and Louise Puffenbarger Gum.

On June 20, 1980, he married Hannah Mae Anderson Trimble.

Mr. Gum was a member of and trustee of Seybert Chapel United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He operated a sawmill for 35 years and did general farm work and carpentry.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janie Simmons Helmick Gum; a brother, William Robert Gum, Sr.; and four stepchildren, Homer, Elmer, Ralph and Melvin Helmick.

He is survived by his wife, Hannah Gum of Monterey; a sister, Catherine Palmer of Monterey; four step-daughters, Carol Maxine Puffenbarger of Mt. Solon, Barbara Henkel of Staunton, Betty Eavey of Staunton and Joyce Landram of Staunton; two stepsons, Melvin Trimble of Springfield and Donald Trimble of Gerogetown, S.C.; two nephews, Bill Gum of Monterey and Richard Gum of Woodbridge; two nieces, Shirley Triplett of Blue Grass and Hilda Puffenbarger of Staunton; a cousin, Thelma Beverage of Monterey; numerous step-grandchildren and a special caregiver, Sherry Lowry.

A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Sullivan and Dr. Daniel Freed.

Burial was in Perry Puffenbarger Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Bob, Wayne, Jack and Dean Beverage, Rudolph Siron, Tracy Triplett, Ira Helmick and Robert Shuttleworth.

Honorary pallbearers were Walter, John and Cyril Beverage, Glen and Paul Halterman, Rodger and Dale Propst, Dougie Bussard, John Lohr and Charles Helmick.
