Alan Chester Pennell, 80, of Richmond and formerly of Monterey, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Lucy Corr Village. He was born March 17, 1928, in Arlington, VA, a son of the late Clarence Pennell and Frances (MacBryde) MacKenzie.
Mr. Pennell was a member and past deacon of Highland Baptist Church. He served on a submarine in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He had owned and operated a residential construction business in Northern Virginia and a fishing tackle shop in Chama, N.M.
Alan was a lifetime member of the NRA.
His wife, Joan O. Pennell, preceded him in death on January 29, 2007.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Michael Pace of Richmond; a son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Yvonne Pennell of Modest Town; five grandchildren, Brandon, Ryan, Lauren and Nathan Pace, and Aaron Taylor; and a great-granddaughter, Marian Adkins.
The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating.
Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Brandon, Ryan and Nathan Pace, Daniel Grant, Kenneth Midgett and Larry Propst.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
