Dorothy Whitson

Dorothy Josephine (Collins) Whitson, 91, of Deerfield, passed away, Saturday, November 13, 2021 at her home.

She was born in Augusta County on October 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Roy Nicholas and Mary Ervine (Rawley) Collins. On April 29, 1950 she married Francis Leo “Bud” Whitson, who preceded her in death on June 11, 2016.

A mail carrier and post office clerk, Mrs. Whitson spent 48 years with the United States Postal Service. She was a member of Deerfield Baptist Church, Deerfield Baptist Women’s Group and Deerfield Homemakers Club.

An easy-going lady, she got along with everyone and loved time spent visiting friends, sitting on the front porch, and baking and cooking, “she could make anything taste good.” Above all, she will be remembered as being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who especially enjoyed every moment she had with her grandkids and great-grands.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by four brothers, Howard, Rawley, Jared and Dick Collins.

Surviving family members include three daughters, Jean Smith and husband, Randy of Deerfield, Joyce Smith and husband, Ron of Roanoke and Julie Wales and David Armstrong of Deerfield; two sons, Ken Whitson and wife, Patty of Deerfield and Dennis Whitson of Deerfield; eight grandchildren, Shane Smith and wife, Jasmine, Laura Matthews and husband, Kelly, Chad Smith, Trevor Smith and Amanda, Chris Smith and Starr, Samantha Cooper and husband, Matthew, Shawn Wales and Heisha and Dylan Wales and Elizabeth; as well as five great-granddaughters, Gracen Ellingson, Adilyn Matthews, Karsen Wales, Emily Matthews and Piper Smith; and two great-grandsons, Reef Smith and Rymer Cooper.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in Deerfield Community Cemetery with Rev. Mark Holder officiating.

Mrs. Whitson’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
